A terrible hurricane surprises "La Fortuna" in the Sea of Sicily

Caption:

       "The bark named la Furtunna. Capt.n Nicholas Olivari; in the waters of Sicily on October 10th, 1860. A hurricane of terribblle wind going up that we were in sufficient danger to get lost, when for grace of Our Lady of the Boschetto we were able to save ourselves, and the said Capt.n dedicates the present vote as devotional hommage and regarding honour to the O.L. of Boschetto in order to have him saved".

We try to render the errors originally contained in the captions: for our old seamen it was much easier with the sails than with the pen!

The boat is also portrayed in a painting of Domenico Gavarrone signed and dated 1862 today exposed in the Maritime Museum of Camogli (Velieri di Camogli, Genoa 1984, p. 29).
