Francesco, son of Capt. Schiaffino, saved from the Danube

Oil on canvas, cm 37x50                                (inventory Costa n. 12)

Caption:

"Francisco Schiaffino son of Capt.n Jos.ph, 9 years young, fell in the river Danube none realizing.

In some distance seeing by a Greek bark he was miraculously saved in the year 1846, 30th of September".

Notes:

A sailor goes away from the sea, but never from the navigation and from its dangers, here occurred and reproduced in a fluvial atmosphere of which the specific vegetation suggests.

Fact to which we are not accustomed in the other paintings, immediately imposes to the observer the body of the poor child while the ship, elsewhere protagonist, is relegated here in the background.

The episode that motivates the donation of the painting is described on a strip of applied paper to the bottom edge that, previewing the necessity of such insertion, has been left blank by the painter.
