A hurricane tears away all the sails of the "Bartolomeo Marciani"
and provokes a sideslip

Caption:

"Horribile hurricane suffered by the ship named Bartolomeo Marciani, Capt.n Antonio Brignati. Being at 36° 55' latitude N. and 72° 48' long. W of Greewich, on the 5th april 1877 the furious wind carried out all the sails that were displayed and also the main curse sail that was half reef, and skidded the ship as here over it is looked at. All the crew did not see other escape than in God and Holy Mary of the Boschetto, and by them invoking grace and aid, in fact they obtained it. The bad time stopped and then the ship were able to straighten and to continue her travel to rescue, therefore the aforesaid captain donates the present offer to the sanctuary in homage and thanks for the received grace and in memoriam".

Notes:

     The Inventory of the Costa cites as n. 63 a duplicate of the same picture with the same registration, offered by a sailor of the crew, "Ship-boy Bozzo Pell.o", painting today unfortunately lost.
